About Ebonyi, Nigeria

Ebonyi State is located in the southeastern region of Nigeria and is predominantly inhabited by the Igbo ethnic group. Its capital, Abakaliki, serves as both the administrative and economic hub of the state. Other key towns include Afikpo, Onueke, Edda, and Onicha.

Established on October 1, 1996, Ebonyi was one of six new states created during the milita regime of that period. It was carved out of parts of both Enugu and Abia States. The state is famously referred to as "The Salt of the Nation" due to its historic salt lakes in Okposi and Uburu, which have long served as local sources of salt production.

Ebonyi is largely an agricultural state and ranks among Nigeria’s top producers of rice, yam, cassava, maize, and beans. Its rich soil and favorable climate support year-round farming, and recent efforts by the state government have encouraged agro-industrial investments. Ebonyi is also home to deposits of lead, limestone, zinc, and natural gas, although large-scale mining is still developing.

The people of Ebonyi speak over ten distinct dialects that are classified under the Igbo language group, including Izzi, Ezza, Ikwo, Afikpo, Mgbo, and Okposi. These dialects contribute to the state’s deep cultural identity.

Geographically, Ebonyi shares borders with Benue State to the north, Enugu State to the west, Abia and Imo States to the south, and Cross River State to the east. In recent years, Ebonyi has been investing in road infrastructure, education, and healthcare to promote development and improve the standard of living across its local government areas.
