Imo State is located in southeastern Nigeria, with Owerri as its capital and largest city. The state was officially created on February 3, 1976, during the regime of General Murtala Mohammed, following the division of the former East Central State. It derives its name from the Imo River, which originates near Okigwe and flows southward into the Atlantic Ocean.
Imo shares boundaries with Anambra to the north, Rivers to the south, Akwa Ibom to the east, and Delta to the west. Geographically, it lies between latitudes 4°45′N and 7°15′N and longitudes 6°50′E and 7°25′E. The state proudly bears the slogan “The Eastern Heartland” due to its central role in the cultural and economic landscape of the Southeast.
The population of Imo is predominantly Igbo, a culturally unified ethnic group with strong traditions, shared ancestry, and a rich language spoken across the state in varying dialects. The people are known for their strong community ties, entrepreneurial spirit, and deep-rooted cultural heritage.
In addition to Owerri, other notable towns in Imo include Orlu, Okigwe, Oguta, Mbaise, Emekuku, and Uzoagba. The state is well-endowed with natural resources, especially crude oil and natural gas, and also boasts highly fertile lands that support the cultivation of crops such as cassava, yam, maize, and oil palm.
With its blend of natural wealth, vibrant cities, and cultural pride, Imo remains a vital part of Nigeria’s southeast and a beacon of Igbo identity.
