Niger State is the largest state in Nigeria by landmass, located in the country’s north-central region—not north-west—despite common misconception. Created on February 3, 1976, its capital is Minna. Other major towns include Bida, Kontagora, and Suleja.
The state takes its name from the River Niger, which flows prominently through its territory. Niger State is home to two of Nigeria’s most important hydroelectric power facilities: the Kainji Dam and the Shiroro Dam, making it crucial to national electricity supply. Kainji National Park, Nigeria’s largest, is also located here and houses the Kainji Lake. Although much of its wildlife has dwindled, the park remains ecologically important.
Indigenous ethnic groups include the Nupe, Gbagyi, Kambari, Kamuku, Dukawa, and Koro. The population practices a mix of Islam and Christianity, with Islam being slightly more prevalent. The state also hosts the FUT Minna (Federal University of Technology), a leading science and tech institution in the country.
Strategically located and agriculturally fertile, Niger State contributes significantly to Nigeria’s food and energy security.
