Bayelsa State is a coastal state in southern Nigeria, situated in the heart of the oil-rich Niger Delta region. It shares boundaries with Delta State to the west and Rivers State to the east. The state was officially established on October 1st, 1996, under the military era at that time. The name “Bayelsa” is derived from the initial letters of three of its major local government areas: Brass , Yenagoa , and Sagbama .
