About Imo, Nigeria

Imo State is located in southeastern Nigeria, with Owerri as its capital and largest city. The state was officially created on February 3, 1976, during the regime of General Murtala Mohammed, following the division of the former East Central State. It derives its name from the Imo River, which originates near Okigwe and flows southward into the Atlantic Ocean.

Imo shares boundaries with Anambra to the north, Rivers to the south, Akwa Ibom to the east, and Delta to the west. Geographically, it lies between latitudes 4°45′N and 7°15′N and longitudes 6°50′E and 7°25′E.
