Nasarawa State, located in Nigeria’s North-Central geopolitical zone, was officially created on October 1st, 1996, following its separation from Plateau State. The state’s capital is Lafia, which serves as the administrative and political hub.
Strategically positioned, Nasarawa shares borders with several states: Kaduna to the north, Federal Capital Territory (Abuja) to the west, Kogi and Benue to the south, and Taraba and Plateau to the east. This makes it a gateway between the north and the middle belt region of Nigeria.
The state is home to a rich tapestry of ethnic groups including the Alago, Eggon, Gwandara, Mada, Tiv, Fulani, and many others. This diversity contributes to its cultural vibrancy and traditional heritage. As of the 2006 national census, Nasarawa had a population of just under 2 million people, distributed across 13 local government areas.
Known as the "Home of Solid Minerals", Nasarawa is rich in natural resources, including tin, marble, and salt. The state also thrives in agriculture, with major crops such as yams, maize, and sesame cultivated across its fertile lands.
Nasarawa State also boasts a growing educational sector with key institutions like the Federal University Lafia, Nasarawa State University, Keffi, Federal Polytechnic Nasarawa, Federal College of Agriculture, Lafia, and the Federal College of Education, Akwanga. These schools serve as academic centers for students from within and beyond the state.
With its abundant resources, cultural wealth, and strategic location near the Federal Capital Territory, Nasarawa is steadily emerging as a key player in Nigeria’s socio-economic development.
