Oyo State is located in south-western Nigeria, with Ibadan as its capital city. The state was created in 1976, carved out of the former Western State of Nigeria.

The state spans an area of approximately 28,454 square kilometers, making it the 14th largest in Nigeria by land size.

Its landscape features ancient rock formations and dome-shaped hills. These rise gradually from about 500 meters above sea level in the south to around 1,219 meters in the northern region.

Oyo is also the origin of several notable rivers such as the Ogun, Oba, Oyan, Otin, Ofiki, Sasa, Oni, Erinle, and Osun rivers, which begin in the highlands of the state.
