Cross River State is located in the southeastern region of Nigeria, with its capital in the historic port city of Calabar. The state is named after the Cross River, which flows through its lush, forested terrain. It shares an international border with the Republic of Cameroon to the east, making it a key link for cross-border trade and cultural exchange.
Originally carved out of the former Eastern Region, Cross River State was created on May 27, 1967. It was initially named the South Eastern State, before it was renamed to Cross River State in the 1976 state creation exercise. In 1987, the present-day Akwa Ibom State was split off from Cross River.
Cross River is renowned for its biodiversity and ecotourism, home to natural attractions such as the Obudu Mountain Resort, the Afi Mountain Wildlife Sanctuary, and part of the Cross River National Park—one of the richest rainforests in West Africa. Calabar also hosts the famous Calabar Carnival, often called “Africa’s biggest street party,” attracting visitors from across the globe.
The people of Cross River belong to various ethnic groups including the Efik, Ejagham, Bekwarra, Bette, Yala, and Obudu, each with its own language, traditions, and festivals. The state places a strong emphasis on cultural preservation, tourism development, and environmental sustainability.
