Enugu State, located in southeastern Nigeria, has its capital in the city of Enugu. Created in 1991 from the former Anambra State, Enugu is often affectionately referred to as "Wawa State"—a nickname derived from the local expression “wa,” which is used for emphasis in place of “mba” (commonly used in other parts of Igboland to say “no”). It is also popularly known by its telephone area code, “042.”
Geographically, Enugu is bordered by Kogi and Benue states to the north, Ebonyi to the east, Abia and Imo to the south, and Anambra to the west. The state spans a land area of approximately 8,730 square kilometers.
With a population of around 3 million people, Enugu is predominantly inhabited by the Igbo-speaking population, renowned for their industriousness, entrepreneurship, and resourcefulness. The people of Enugu are also known for their extensive travels and, above all, their warm hospitality. It is customary in the culture to begin conversations with friendly inquiries about a person’s health and family before proceeding to any business matters.
The major urban centers in the state include Enugu (the capital), Nsukka, Agbani, Udi, Awgu, and Oji River.
