History of Agege

The name Agege is believed to have come from the Yoruba phrase “Age Igi,” meaning tree cutters. Early Hausa settlers and Awori farmers in the area were known for felling trees in kola nut plantations. Over time, the phrase “Ilu awon age igi” — the town of tree cutters — evolved into the modern name Agege.

Formally established as a Local Government Area in 1954, Agege became one of the oldest administrative regions within the Ikeja Division of Lagos State. Its development was boosted by the Lagos–Abeokuta Expressway and Agege Railway Station, which connected it to other parts of Lagos and Ogun States.
