Borno State is located in the northeastern corner of Nigeria and stands as one of the country’s largest states by landmass, covering approximately 70,898 square kilometers. Its capital and largest city, Maiduguri, serves as a vital administrative and commercial center in the region. The state derives its name from the historic Borno Empire, which played a significant role in the pre-colonial Islamic and trans-Saharan trade history of West Africa.
Borno was officially created in 1976 following the division of the former North-Eastern State. It remained intact until 1991, when Yobe State was carved out of its western region. Today, Borno shares international borders with three countries: Niger to the north, Chad to the northeast, and Cameroon to the east, making it Nigeria’s key frontier state in the Lake Chad Basin.
The state is ethnically diverse, with the Kanuri being the dominant group, alongside other indigenous communities such as the Babur, Marghi, and Shuwa Arabs. Hausa and Fulani communities also reside in various parts of the state.
In addition to its cultural heritage, Borno plays an essential role in regional agriculture. The state's economy relies heavily on farming and livestock rearing, with major crops including millet, sorghum, maize, and groundnuts. The vast plains of the Chad Basin support fishing and seasonal irrigation farming, contributing to food production in the region.
Despite facing security challenges in recent years, Borno remains a historically rich state with strong cultural traditions and strategic geographic importance in Nigeria’s northeast.
