Ogun State is located in southwestern Nigeria, sharing boundaries with Lagos State to the south, Oyo and Osun States to the north, Ondo State to the east, and the Republic of Benin to the west. Its capital and largest city is Abeokuta, a historic center rich in cultural heritage.

Known as the "Gateway to Nigeria", Ogun State was established in February 1976, following its separation from the former Western State. According to the 1991 census, the state had a population of approximately 2,338,570.
