About Ondo, Nigeria

Ondo State is located in Nigeria’s southwest and was created on February 3, 1976, from the former Western State. Its capital is Akure. Originally, it included what is now Ekiti State, separated in 1996.

Known as the Sunshine State, Ondo has 18 local government areas and a rich ethnic mix, mainly from Yoruba subgroups like the Akoko, Akure, Ikale, Ilaje, Ondo, and Owo. Minority groups such as the Ijaw (Apoi and Arogbo) and Ilaje reside in the coastal belt.

Ondo is a major producer of cocoa and holds Nigeria’s largest reserve of bitumen. It's also known for its higher institutions, including the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA), Adekunle Ajasin University in Akungba, and the University of Medical Sciences in Ondo town.

With its natural resources, academic excellence, and attractions like the scenic Idanre Hills, Ondo plays a significant role in the region’s development.
