Benue State is located in Nigeriaβs Middle Belt region, with Makurdi as its capital city. Named after the Benue River that flows through it, the state was created in 1976 from the former Benue-Plateau State. Initially, it included parts of todayβs Kogi State, but those areasβmostly inhabited by the Igala peopleβwere merged into Kogi in 1991.
The state is ethnically diverse, predominantly occupied by the Tiv and Idoma people. Other ethnic communities include the Igede, Etulo, Abakwa, and smaller pockets of Igbo-speaking groups near boundary regions with Ebonyi and Enugu States, especially in LGAs like Obi and Oju.
Known as the βFood Basket of the Nation,β Benue is a major agricultural hub. It produces high volumes of yams, cassava, potatoes, soya bean, guinea corn, beniseed, and flax. Farming is central to the economy, employing a majority of the population.
Benue is also home to the Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi, a key institution supporting agricultural research and innovation in Nigeria. The Benue Valley offers fertile land and scenic views, making it ideal not just for farming but also for potential eco-tourism development.
