Kogi State is strategically located in the central region of Nigeria, with Lokoja as its capital city—historically known as the first administrative capital of modern Nigeria during colonial times. The state was carved out in 1991 from parts of the old Kwara and Benue States. It is famously referred to as the "Confluence State" because Lokoja marks the meeting point of the River Niger and River Benue, Nigeria’s two largest rivers.
Kogi is the only Nigerian state that shares boundaries with ten other states, giving it significant geographic and commercial importance. The state is rich in natural resources, including coal, limestone, and iron ore, and is home to the Ajaokuta Steel Complex, one of the largest in Africa, though yet to reach full operational capacity.
Agriculture remains a major livelihood for the people of Kogi, with crops such as cassava, yam, rice, and cashew widely cultivated. The state's major ethnic groups are the Igala, Ebira, and Okun (Yoruba-speaking), each contributing to its rich cultural heritage. Kogi also hosts several institutions of higher learning, including Prince Abubakar Audu University and Federal Polytechnic Idah.
With its blend of natural resources, strategic location, and cultural diversity, Kogi continues to play a vital role in Nigeria’s unity, economy, and development.
