Ekiti State is located in the southwestern region of Nigeria, with its capital city in Ado-Ekiti. Geographically, the state is positioned between longitudes 4°51′ and 5°45′ East of the Greenwich Meridian and latitudes 7°15′ and 8°5′ North of the Equator.
Ekiti was officially created on October 1, 1996, during the military era. It was carved out from the old Ondo State, incorporating twelve former local government areas of the Ekiti Zone. Today, the state comprises 16 Local Government Areas.
It is bordered to the north by Kwara and Kogi States, to the west by Osun State, and to the east and south by Ondo State. Ekiti covers a total landmass of approximately5,887 square kilometers.
One of Ekiti’s most defining geographical features is its hilly terrain. The name “Ekiti” itself is derived from the Yoruba word for "hill," reflecting the landscape's topography. Many towns and settlements in the state are located on or around these hills.
Ekiti is widely known for its strong commitment to education and is often referred to as the "Fountain of Knowledge" due to its high literacy rate and large number of academic institutions. The state is home to notable institutions like Ekiti State University and the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE).
Agriculture plays a key role in the state’s economy, with major crops including yam, cassava, cocoa, rice, maize, and bananas. The state is also gradually building its presence in tourism, thanks to its scenic hills, cultural festivals, and natural attractions such as the Ikogosi Warm Springs, where warm and cold water flow side-by-side from the same source.
